New Hire Orientation Program Development

Your New Hire Orientation Program is your introduction into your workplace’s culture and expectations and it’s crucial to emphasize the importance of the Safety Culture at your workplace from day 1.  Meeting WorkSafeBC requirements is more than ticking boxes on your checklist, it’s ensuring that your new team members understand the processes that you have put in place to ensure they go home daily whole and healthy.

If your New Hire Orientation doesn’t cover some of the specific safety information required at your workplace, you run the risk of receiving an Inspection Report from WorkSafeBC, not to mention the increased risk this poses to the entire team and your worksite overall. New Hire Orientation is a new workers first introduction to your Safety Culture and this is your opportunity to present Safe Work Procedures… before they learn any bad habits from colleagues. To help you ensure you exceed WorkSafeBC and Certificate of Recognition requirements, REC can prepare specific education and training materials that address the following:

  • Incident, Injury, Near Miss and Hazard reporting, and include who, what, when, where, why and the follow-up that they can expect from the leadership and the JHS Committee.

  • How to immediately address and rectify high risk behaviours, actions or deficiencies when there is no leadership available.

  • Specifics on how to respond to each foreseeable emergency, including your expectations of rescue efforts and specific location of emergency supplies and rations.

  • Your Recover at Work Program, including your expectations of their participation in their recovery at work, rehabilitation and performance of light duties.

  • Demonstration of understanding of each critical task and action required to ensure their safe performance at work.

  • Introductions to the JHS Committee membership as well as the specific role that the members play to support their Physical and Psychological Safety.

  • Specific procedures in place related to their department and position that manage and mitigate the hazards on site.
